Insignia Dryer C9 Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
A C9 code on an Insignia dryer means its control electronics (the PCBs, or printed circuit boards) have failed. Insignia's instruction is clear: don't use the dryer and contact authorized service. This isn't a code you can repair yourself, but there are a few safe, free checks to rule out a power or supply problem before you book a technician.
This page covers one code. See every Insignia dryer code we cover on our Dryer error codes page.
What the C9 code means
Insignia's user guide for the 6.7 cu. ft. front-load dryers NS-FDRE67WH8A (electric), NS-FDRE67WH8A-C (electric, Canadian model) and NS-FDRG67WH8A (gas) lists C9 as "The PCBs failed." Its solution: "Contact authorized service personnel for help. DO NOT use your dryer."
That's stricter than the guide's advice for the other two codes:
- E4: the humidity sensor failed. The dryer finishes the current cycle, but items could be over-dried, and you can still use the Time cycles while you wait for service.
- E5: the temperature sensor failed. Like C9, Insignia says not to use the dryer and to contact service.
The guide also says, in its troubleshooting section, not to try to repair the dryer yourself, because doing so invalidates the warranty.
Insignia's top-load washer uses C9 too ("The PCB failed"). That's a different appliance, but the advice is the same: contact Insignia Customer Care. Codes vary by model, so if your dryer's model number isn't one of the three above, check your own user guide.
Likely causes (most common first)
Insignia gives only one cause for C9: a failed control board. It doesn't list any user-fixable causes. Before you call, it's still worth ruling out the simple things that would make a service visit a wasted trip:
- A power supply problem. A loose plug, a tripped or half-tripped breaker, or a blown fuse. An electric dryer needs a 30-amp fuse or breaker on both sides of the line. These checks don't fix a board, but they're free.
- On gas models, the gas supply turned off. Insignia doesn't link this to C9, but if the dryer was recently moved or serviced, it's worth confirming the supply valve was turned back on.
- A failed control board (PCB). If C9 comes back after the checks below, this is the cause Insignia names, and the fix is a service call.
How to fix it, step by step
Insignia says not to use the dryer with C9, so these steps are about checking the supply and doing one reset, not running loads.
- Stop the cycle and take the clothes out. If the load is warm, spread it out so it can cool.
- Cut the power to reset it. Unplug the dryer, or switch off its breaker. Wait a minute or two.
- Electric models need a 30-amp breaker or fuse on both sides of the line, so check both halves of a double breaker or both fuses.
- The gas model plugs into a standard 120V outlet.
- Check the breaker or fuses while the power is off. Reset a tripped breaker by switching it fully off, then back on. Replace a blown fuse with one of the same rating. If a breaker trips again right away, stop and call an electrician or appliance technician.
- Check the plug and outlet. Make sure the plug is pushed firmly into the outlet. On the gas model, you can plug a lamp into the same outlet to confirm it has power. Don't open the dryer's terminal block or test a 240V outlet yourself.
- On gas models, make sure the gas supply is on. Check that the shutoff valve for the dryer's gas line is open. Don't loosen, tighten or disconnect any gas fittings. If you smell gas, don't touch any electrical switch or use a phone in the building; leave and call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone (see Safety notes).
- Restore power once and watch the display. Plug the dryer back in or switch the breaker back on, then press Power.
- If C9 shows again, stop. Leave the dryer unplugged and contact service.
- If the display looks normal, the fault may have been a one-off, but Insignia's instruction for C9 is still not to use the dryer. Contact service before you go back to using it.
- Call service. There's no further DIY step for C9.
Test the part
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and turn off the water supply before you open any panel. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
There's no safe homeowner test for the control board. No simple meter check will tell you whether a board is good, and live checks are a technician's job. Insignia's guide warns that the control board and the temperature-regulating thermistor are intentionally not grounded and may present a shock risk during servicing.
What you can safely do is a quick look:
- Unplug the dryer, or switch off its breaker. These are look-only checks, so you don't need to turn off the gas on a gas model. Just don't touch or disconnect any gas fittings.
- Look at the plug and cord (if your dryer is plugged in rather than hard-wired). Check for scorch marks, melted plastic, cracked insulation, or a loose plug. If you see any, leave the dryer unplugged and have the cord, plug or outlet checked by a qualified electrician or appliance technician.
- Look at the outlet for discoloration or melting.
- Write down the model and serial numbers from the dryer's labels for the service call. Insignia's guide notes the data label behind the door lists the electrical requirements.
Don't remove the control panel or the dryer's back panel to look at the board. Insignia advises against self-repair, and its warranty excludes damage from repairs by anyone Insignia hasn't authorized.
Safety notes
- Don't use the dryer while it shows C9. That's Insignia's instruction.
- Unplug it or switch off the breaker before you inspect the plug, cord or outlet, and don't handle the plug with wet hands.
- No live electrical tests and no opening the cabinet. The control board carries a shock risk during servicing.
- If you smell gas: don't try to light any appliance, don't touch any electrical switch, and don't use any phone in your building. Get everyone out, then call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. If you can't reach them, call the fire department. Insignia also says gas dryer installation and service must be done by a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier.
- If you notice a burning smell, smoke or scorching, leave the dryer unplugged and get it inspected before using it again.
When to call a pro
Call authorized service if:
- C9 comes back after a power reset. That's the expected outcome, and service is the right next step.
- A breaker trips again right away, or you see scorching on the plug, cord or outlet. An electrician should check the circuit, too.
- You smell gas, or you're not sure whether the gas supply is set up correctly.
- Your dryer is still under warranty. Insignia's limited warranty runs one year from purchase. Don't attempt your own repair, because Insignia says that invalidates the warranty.
Contact Insignia at 1-877-467-4289 (U.S. and Canada), the number listed on Best Buy's Insignia support page and in the user guide. Have your model number, serial number and purchase receipt ready.

What does C9 mean on an Insignia dryer?
Insignia says the dryer's control boards (PCBs) have failed.
Can I still use my Insignia dryer with a C9 code?
No. Insignia says not to use the dryer and to contact authorized service.
Will unplugging the dryer clear C9?
It's worth one try as a reset. If C9 comes back, stop. Either way, Insignia says to contact service.
Can I replace the control board myself?
Insignia advises against self-repair and says it invalidates the warranty. The board also carries a shock risk during servicing, so leave it to a technician.
