Navien Water Heater E003 Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
E003 on a Navien tankless water heater means ignition failure: the heater tried to light its burner and couldn't, so it stopped. Navien's owner fix is to make sure the main gas supply valve is open and then reset the heater. If E003 keeps coming back, the cause is usually gas pressure, the gas line, or the ignition parts, and that's a job for a licensed technician.
If you smell gas, leave the building right away and call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. Don't try to light any appliance, touch electrical switches, or use a phone in the building. If you can't reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.
- Reset the heater. On NPE-2 models, press the Back button on the front panel. Then open a hot water tap.
- Check the gas valve at the water heater. Make sure the main gas supply valve on the gas line to the heater is fully open. Turn it by hand only.
- Check your other gas appliances. If the stove or furnace won't light either, the problem is your gas supply. If you have propane, check the tank gauge.
If hot water is back and E003 is gone, you're done. If it returns, keep reading.

What the E003 code means
Navien's NPE-2 User's Information Manual lists E003 as "Ignition failure." The action it gives is "Ensure that the main gas supply valve is open." Navien's older NPE Operation Manual uses the same name for E003.
Navien tankless heaters have no pilot light. Navien's manual says the appliance "is equipped with an ignition device which automatically lights the burner." When you open a hot tap, the heater tries to light. If the control never sees a flame, it shuts the gas off and shows E003.
You'll usually notice the water stays cold.
Look-alike codes that mean something different:
- E012, flame loss: the burner lit and then went out. Navien's fixes are cleaning the intake air filter and making sure the power cord is properly grounded.
- E004, false flame detection: the heater senses a flame when there shouldn't be one.
- E110, abnormal air pressure: Navien says to make sure the exhaust pipe is clear and to clean the intake air filter.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Gas valve closed or partly closed. This is the one cause Navien's owner manual lists. Valves often get bumped or left off after other work.
- No gas reaching the heater. Gas service may be off at the meter, interrupted by the utility, or the propane tank may be empty.
- Air in the gas line, usually right after installation or gas work. HQ Plumbing & Air, a plumbing company, says this is an installer item.
- Low or unstable gas pressure, often from a gas line that's too small or too long, or other gas appliances running at the same time. HQ Plumbing notes that Navien's installation manual says gas pressure should be measured by a licensed professional only.
- Air intake or exhaust restriction. HQ Plumbing says a blocked intake filter or exhaust can also affect ignition. Navien links the filter to codes E012 and E110.
- Worn igniter or dirty flame rod. These parts sit inside the burner compartment, so a technician has to check them.
How to fix it, step by step
Try a hot tap after each step, and stop if you smell gas.
- Reset once. Press the Back button (NPE-2 models), then open a hot tap and give the heater a minute. Navien says resetting may fix minor problems.
- Open the main gas supply valve fully. It's on the gas line to the heater. The "Parts of the Water Heater" section of your manual shows where.
- Turn it by hand only. Navien's safety instructions say to use only your hand on the gas controls, never tools. If it won't turn by hand, don't try to repair it. Call a qualified service technician.
- If you found it closed, open it, reset the heater, and try a hot tap.
- Confirm you have gas. Make sure another gas appliance works. If not, call your gas utility or propane supplier.
- Think about recent gas work. If E003 started after installation, a meter change, or a propane tank swap, call your installer. Don't loosen fittings to bleed air from the line.
- Check the vent outside. Make sure the exhaust and air intake ends aren't blocked by snow, leaves, or nests. Don't take anything apart.
- Clean the air intake filter if it's overdue. Navien's manual has owners do this every 3 to 4 months (section 4.5). It requires turning off the heater, unplugging it, and removing the front cover. Skip this step if you're not comfortable doing that.
- Stop after two failed resets. Repeated resets won't fix a gas or ignition problem. Navien says to contact an authorized technician, a licensed professional, or Navien Technical Support if resetting and its suggested remedies don't work.
Test the part
Switch off the power at the breaker (electric models) or unplug the unit, turn the gas control to OFF (gas models), close the cold-water supply valve and let the water cool — tank water can scald. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
The parts behind E003 (igniter, flame rod, gas valve) are inside the burner compartment, next to live gas and high-voltage ignition. There's no safe homeowner meter test for them. Here's what you can safely check.
- Unplug the water heater and close the gas valve. Press the Power button to turn it off, unplug the power supply, then turn the gas valve to closed by hand.
- Look over the power cord and outlet. Check for cuts, scorch marks, or a damaged plug.
- Look at the gas line from the outside only. Check for a crushed or kinked connector. Don't tighten or loosen anything. If something looks wrong or you smell gas, leave and call your gas supplier.
- Check the vent and intake pipes. Navien says to stop using the heater if any vent pipes, elbows, or intake pipes are damaged.
- Look for water damage. Navien says that if any part of the heater has been under water, don't use it and call a qualified service technician. The heater must be replaced.
- Don't test internal parts. Igniter, flame rod, and gas valve checks need live power and gas, so no meter readings are given here.
When you're done, open the gas valve by hand, plug the heater back in, and press the Power button.
Safety notes
- If you smell gas, leave and call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. Don't light anything or touch switches.
- Never try to light the burner by hand. Navien says not to.
- Use only your hand on gas controls. Navien warns that force or attempted repair may result in a fire or explosion.
- Don't work on gas lines, the burner, or the gas valve. Navien says installation and service must be done by a qualified installer, service agency, or the gas supplier.
- No live electrical tests. Unplug the heater before removing the front cover.
- Hot surfaces and hot water. The heater can stay hot for several minutes after shutdown, and Navien warns that water at or above 125 °F can scald.
When to call a pro
Call a licensed plumber or gas technician if:
- E003 comes back after a reset with the gas valve fully open and other gas appliances working.
- The heater is new, or the gas was just worked on. Bleeding the gas line and checking gas line sizing are installer jobs.
- You suspect low gas pressure. Measuring it needs a manometer and a licensed gas professional.
- The fix would mean working inside the burner compartment (igniter, flame rod, gas valve).
- You see damage, rust, water, or scorching on or under the heater.
- The heater is under warranty. Navien's limited warranty runs from the original installation date, so have that date and your model number ready.
Navien's owner manual lists Technical Support at 1-800-519-8794.

FAQ
What does E003 mean on a Navien tankless water heater?
Ignition failure. The heater tried to light the burner and couldn't. Navien's first fix is making sure the main gas supply valve is open.
How do I reset a Navien after E003?
On NPE-2 models, press the Back button on the front panel. If the code keeps returning, find the cause instead of resetting again.
Why does my Navien show E003 after a new install or gas work?
Air in the gas line or a valve left closed are common after gas work. Call your installer, and don't bleed the line yourself.
What's the difference between Navien E003 and E012?
E003 means the burner never lit. E012 means it lit and then lost its flame.
