GE & GE Profile Dryer Error Codes: What They Mean and How to Fix Them
Most GE dryers don’t show error codes during normal use — instead you’ll see alerts such as Check Vent or VENT BLOCKED, or status words like SENSE. GE’s UltraFresh front-load dryers (GFD55/65/85) add a Consumer Fault Code Mode that lets you read stored fault numbers to pass to a technician. This guide covers 9 GE dryer alerts and codes. We don’t list technician-only service codes for other models because they vary widely.
Note the exact alert or code and your model number (usually inside the door opening). Numbered codes below are from GE’s service documentation for GFD55/65/85 models; they are marked Verify in your manual.
GE dryer error code and alert table
Always unplug the dryer or switch off its breakers before cleaning the lint housing or vent.
| Code | Meaning | Likely cause | Step-by-step fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check Vent | Alert: the dryer’s sensor detects low airflow — the vent is blocked or restricted. | Lint-clogged duct; crushed or kinked duct; blocked or stuck outside wall cap; bird or animal nest. |
|
| VENT BLOCKEDfront-load models | Front-load dryers with Vent Sensing: airflow is blocked (for example by a bird’s nest). The message clears once the dryer starts and senses the blockage is gone. | Blocked vent run or outside hood. |
|
| SENSE | Status, not a fault: the dryer is warming up and sensing. The estimated time shows for 3 minutes, then SENSE scrolls until exhaust temperature reaches its target. | Normal operation on models showing “Est Total Cycle Time”. |
|
| E7GFD55/65/85 (fault 7) | The power supply is miswired (L2 and neutral reversed); the display shows E7. | Incorrect power cord connection at the terminal block, usually after installation. |
|
| 1 / 2GFD55/65/85 | Fault code 1: inlet thermistor failure. Fault code 2: outlet thermistor failure (sensor readings out of range). | Temperature sensor or wiring fault. |
|
| 6GFD55/65/85 | A button has been held down for 1 minute and was logged as stuck. | Stuck or damaged control button. |
|
| 8 / 13GFD55/65/85 | The door latch/door switch signal hasn’t changed over five cycles (the control never saw the door open). | Running cycles without opening the door, or a stuck door switch. |
|
| 9 / 10GFD55/65/85 | Dry-load detection (9) or empty-drum detection (10) was tripped. | Starting with an empty drum or already-dry clothes; sensor issue. |
|
| 11GFD55/65/85 | The blocked-vent algorithm detected a blockage. | Restricted vent run. |

Troubleshooting without an error code
No code on the display, but something’s not right? Work through these safe checks for the most common dryer problems, in order. They apply to most GE dryers. Unplug the dryer before touching hoses, filters or panels.
Dryer won’t start
- Close the door firmly — the dryer won’t run if the door switch doesn’t detect it closed.
- Check the plug and the breaker. Electric dryers use a 240-volt circuit with a double breaker (or two fuses) — reset both sides if one has tripped.
- Check whether Control/Child Lock is on (lock icon or a lock message on the display).
- Press and hold Start for a second or two — many dryers need a longer press than a tap.
Dryer runs but doesn’t heat
- Make sure you didn’t select an air-only, no-heat or Air Fluff setting.
- Electric dryers: check both breakers or fuses for the dryer circuit — a dryer can tumble with one leg of power but won’t heat.
- Gas dryers: confirm the gas shut-off valve behind the dryer is open and other gas appliances are working.
- Clean the lint filter and check the vent (see “takes too long”) — a blocked vent can trip a safety thermostat or fuse that stops heating.
- If it still won’t heat, the heating element, igniter, gas valve, thermal fuse or thermostat may need testing by a technician.
Dryer takes too long or clothes are still damp
- Clean the lint filter before every load. If you use dryer sheets, wash the screen occasionally with warm soapy water and a soft brush to remove residue.
- Pull the dryer out and check the duct behind it isn’t crushed, kinked or coiled.
- Go outside and check the vent hood: the flap should open freely when the dryer runs and there should be strong airflow.
- Don’t overload the dryer, and make sure the washer spun the load properly (very wet loads take much longer).
- On sensor-dry models, wipe the metal moisture-sensor bars inside the drum with a soft cloth; residue can make the dryer end cycles early or late.
- Have the full vent run professionally cleaned if it has been more than a year or the run is long.
Dryer runs but the drum won’t turn
- Unplug the dryer, then try turning the drum by hand. If it spins very freely with no resistance, the drive belt may be broken.
- Check for an item jammed between the drum and the front of the dryer.
- If you hear the motor hum but the drum doesn’t move, stop using the dryer — the belt, idler pulley or motor need a technician.
Dryer is squeaking, thumping or noisy
- Check pockets and the drum for coins, buttons, zippers and other hard objects.
- Level the dryer so it doesn’t rock.
- Squealing or squeaking that grows over time usually points to worn drum rollers, an idler pulley or drum glides; thumping can be a flat spot on a roller. These are repair jobs for a technician or an experienced DIYer.
- A burning smell, smoke or sparks: switch off at the breaker and don’t use the dryer until it has been inspected.
Common mistakes
Many “faults” are caused by how the dryer is loaded, installed or maintained. Avoid these and you’ll see far fewer codes:
- Skipping the lint filter. Clean it before every load. A clogged filter slows drying, raises temperatures and can trigger vent or overheat codes.
- Neglecting the vent. Crushed foil ducts, long runs and lint-clogged outside hoods are the top causes of long drying times and overheating. Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct and clean the run regularly.
- Overloading. Clothes need space to tumble. Overfilled drums dry unevenly and take longer.
- Drying very wet loads. If the washer didn’t spin properly, fix that first — the dryer isn’t designed to remove standing water.
- Ignoring residue on the lint screen and sensors. Dryer-sheet film can block airflow through the screen and fool moisture sensors. Wash the screen and wipe the sensor bars occasionally.
- Using an extension cord or wrong outlet. Dryers should be plugged directly into a correctly rated outlet; low or incorrect voltage causes heating and power codes.
Tips and tricks for GE owners
Useful GE-specific features and procedures, confirmed from GE’s own support pages and manuals. Exact buttons vary by model, so check your manual.
- Read stored fault codes yourself (GFD55/65/85). From idle with all lights off, press and hold Start for 10 seconds until all lights come on. The first stored fault shows on the display; press Start for the next one. “--” means none. Press any other pad or turn a knob to exit. (Per GE’s technical service guide for these models.)
- Control lock on GFD85-style dryers. Press and hold the Light pad for 3 seconds; the lock icon flashes while locking and stays lit when locked. Other models use different buttons — check your manual.
- SENSE isn’t a fault. It’s the warm-up/sensing phase. Times settle as the dryer learns your vent over several cycles.
- Clean the vent yearly. GE recommends cleaning the vent at least once a year even if the Check Vent alert never appears.
Safety note
Unplug the dryer (or switch off both breakers for an electric dryer) before cleaning the lint housing, moving the dryer or touching the vent. Gas dryers: if you smell gas, don’t operate any switches or the dryer — leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Don’t disconnect or reconnect gas lines yourself. Never run a dryer without the lint filter, and never ignore repeated overheating or vent warnings — lint build-up is a fire risk. Don’t open the cabinet or touch internal wiring. If your dryer is under warranty, DIY repairs beyond basic cleaning may affect coverage — check with GE Appliances first.
When to call a pro
The steps above are limited to safe, user-level checks. Call GE Appliances service or a qualified appliance technician if:
- Check Vent or VENT BLOCKED returns after you’ve cleaned the whole vent run — the duct may be too long or damaged inside a wall.
- E7 (miswired power) appears — the power cord wiring must be corrected.
- Stored fault codes 1, 2, 6 or 8 keep returning.
- The dryer won’t heat or the drum won’t turn.
- You smell gas (leave and call your gas utility), or notice burning, smoke or sparks.

Frequently asked questions
Do GE dryers have error codes?
Most GE dryers show alerts rather than codes, such as Check Vent or VENT BLOCKED. GE UltraFresh front-load dryers (GFD55, GFD65 and GFD85 series) also store numbered fault codes you can read in Consumer Fault Code Mode.
What does Check Vent mean on a GE dryer?
The dryer has detected low airflow, meaning the vent is blocked or restricted. Clean the lint filter, vacuum the duct and check the outside wall cap flaps move freely.
How do I see fault codes on a GE UltraFresh dryer?
From idle with all lights off, press and hold Start for 10 seconds. The first stored fault appears; press Start to see the next. Two dashes mean no faults. Press any other pad to exit.
Why does my GE dryer display say SENSE?
SENSE is normal. The dryer shows the estimated time for 3 minutes, then scrolls SENSE while warming up until the exhaust air reaches its target temperature.
What does E7 mean on a GE dryer?
On GE UltraFresh dryers, E7 indicates the power supply is miswired. Switch off the breakers and have the power cord connection corrected before using the dryer.
