Speed Queen dryer: tumbles, no heat

By · Published · Updated · Sources

Symptom: drum tumbles, clothes stay cold. Common on durable Speed Queen electric and gas dryers. No invented part numbers — checklist follows Speed Queen user-guide troubleshooting plus standard thermal-fuse practice.

Safety note

These pages are educational DIY tips for older machines — not a licensed repair service. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels. If you smell gas, burning, or see sparks, stop and call a professional. Leave gas lines, sealed refrigerant, mold remediation, fire-damaged equipment, and structural work to licensed pros.

Try this first
  1. Set a timed heated cycle — not No Heat, Cool Down, Cool Tumble, or Extended Tumble.
  2. Electric: at the breaker panel, check both legs of the dryer circuit (two breakers or fuses). One open leg often yields “tumbles, no heat.”
  3. Clean the lint filter; check the outdoor vent hood flapper moves freely and the duct isn’t crushed or lint-packed.

Settings and supply

  • Speed Queen user guides list “Dryer won’t heat” checks: control not in cooling / no-heat portion of the cycle; electric panel fuses/breakers; gas models — equipment and main gas valves on.
  • The guides note the dryer itself does not have a household-style electrical fuse; electric dryers use a dual-fuse/breaker circuit at the panel.

Vent path

Restricted exhaust is both a no-heat cause and a fire risk. Straighten kinked duct, clean lint from the run, and confirm the weather hood isn’t pushed shut or blocked. If clothes are hot near the dryer but the hose is scorching, stop and clear the vent before another load.

Thermal fuse (honest DIY line)

A one-time thermal fuse on the blower housing or heater path opens when the dryer overheats — often because of poor airflow. Continuity testing needs a multimeter with power disconnected. If the fuse is open, fix the vent restriction before replacing the fuse, or the new one can fail again. Use your model number for the correct fuse; we don’t invent readings or part IDs here.

Call a pro when
  • Gas dryer — any gas-valve, igniter, or burner work.
  • You’re not set up to safely access the heater/blower area with power locked out.
  • Breakers and vent are good, heat still missing (element, thermostat, or control).
  • Burning smell, scorched wires, or repeated fuse failures after a cleaned vent.
