Before you look up a code

On central air conditioners, heat pumps and mini-splits, codes usually show on the thermostat, the indoor unit or a blinking light on the outdoor unit’s control board. Many come down to a dirty filter, a blocked condensate drain (float switch), a tripped breaker or outdoor disconnect, or an iced or blocked coil. On portable and window units, a full water tank or a blocked exhaust hose is common. Refrigerant, compressor and capacitor problems need a licensed HVAC technician. Write down the exact code and your model number first — codes can differ between model families of the same brand.

Safety first

Always unplug the appliance before removing filters or panels. Never bypass a door lock or safety switch. If you smell gas, burning, or see sparks, stop and call a professional.

Central AC, heat pump or mini-split: turn the system off at the thermostat, then switch off the power at the outdoor disconnect and the breaker before you touch anything. Refrigerant work and the high-voltage capacitor (it can hold a dangerous charge even with the power off) are for a licensed HVAC technician only.
