Samsung Refrigerator 41 Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
A 41 code on a Samsung refrigerator points to a problem with the Family Hub touchscreen's software, not with cooling. Samsung's first fix is a simple screen reboot using a hidden switch inside the right-hand door, which takes under a minute. If you see 41C right after a software update, Samsung says tapping OK once is usually enough.
Some models show 42 with the same flashing blue lights. Samsung Canada groups 41 and 42 together.
These take about 3 minutes and need no tools. Don't unplug the fridge: Samsung asks owners not to unless directed.
- If the screen shows 41C after an update, tap OK. Samsung says to do this the first time the error appears after the update.
- Open the right-hand fridge door and find the small switch cover at the top right corner of the door.
- Push the cover up to reveal the Family Hub power switch.
- Turn the switch off, wait about 15 seconds, and turn it back on. Then slide the cover back until it clicks.
- Give the screen a minute to restart, and check whether the code is gone.
That screen reset doesn't touch the cooling system. Samsung says the fridge keeps the temperature and other settings it last had, even when the panel isn't working.
This 3-minute fix saved 0 homeowners a technician visit this month.
This page goes deeper on one code. For every other Samsung refrigerator code, see the full guide — or jump back to the 41 row in the code table.
What the 41 code means
Samsung lists two closely related codes:
- 41 or 42 with blue lights flashing is a "Family Hub software issue," a software or system error on the Family Hub screen (Samsung Canada).
- 41C is a "Family Hub update issue," a glitch after a software update. Samsung US says its 41C steps apply only to 3-door French door Family Hub models.
Either way, this is the computer in the door having a problem. It isn't a fan, compressor, or temperature fault. Your food should stay cold while you sort it out, but check that the fridge still feels cold to be sure.
Samsung's warning about the panel: Samsung asks owners not to unplug the refrigerator unless directed, and not to tap around on the panel trying to make an error "go away." Both can make it harder for a technician to diagnose the fault. The Family Hub switch and the single OK tap for 41C are the steps Samsung itself gives.
Look-alike codes: If you see PC ER or PC CH, that's a communication error, often after a power surge or a loose door connection, and it has different steps. AP just means the fridge is in Wi-Fi setup mode.
Likely causes (most common first)
- A software update that didn't finish cleanly. This is the classic 41C trigger on 3-door Family Hub models.
- A temporary Family Hub software or system error. Samsung Canada lists this as the cause of 41 and 42.
- Out-of-date software. Samsung's 41C steps start with making sure the latest update is installed.
- A hardware fault in the Family Hub. If the code keeps returning after reboots, Samsung says to request service.
How to fix it, step by step
Do these in order. Check the display after each step.
- Write down exactly what you see. Note whether it's 41, 42, or 41C, and whether the blue lights inside are flashing. Take a photo for Samsung support.
- For 41C, tap OK once. Samsung's US steps say to tap OK the first time 41C appears after an update.
- Reboot the Family Hub screen.
- Open the right-hand fridge door.
- Find the switch cover at the top right corner of the door, and push it up.
- Turn the red switch off.
- Wait about 15 seconds.
- Turn it back on.
- Slide the cover back until it clicks into place.
- Let it fully restart. Give the screen a few minutes to boot before judging whether it worked.
- Check for a software update. Samsung's 41C steps say to confirm the latest update has been downloaded and installed. Look in the Family Hub's Settings menu; menu names vary by software version, so check your user manual if you can't find it.
- Make sure the fridge is still cooling. Open the doors and check that the fridge and freezer feel cold. If they're warming, protect your food (see Safety notes) and request service.
- Watch for a repeat. Samsung US says that if 41C happens more than once after the update, request service. Samsung Canada says the same if 41 or 42 persists after a reboot.
Don't jump to a factory reset. Samsung's reset page describes a Family Hub factory data reset, but it deletes all your data on the screen. That's a step to take only if Samsung support asks you to.
Test the part
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and turn off the water supply before you open any panel. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
There's no part an owner can safely test for a 41 or 41C code. It's a software fault in the Family Hub screen, and the screen's electronics sit inside the door, so the screen reboot above is the "test."
- Unplug the refrigerator only if Samsung support tells you to. Samsung asks owners not to unplug it for this code unless directed, because it can make diagnosis harder.
- Look at the switch cover. Make sure it clicked fully back into place after the reboot.
- Check whether the screen responds to touch once it has restarted. Note whether apps open normally.
- Note any other codes. On Family Hub models, Samsung says you can see current and past error codes by running a Self Check under Apps, Fridge Manager, Fridge Settings. Take a photo of the list for the technician.
- Stop there. Don't open the door's top cover, unplug the door wiring, or try to reach the screen's electronics. That's for Samsung service.
Safety notes
- Don't unplug the fridge unless Samsung tells you to. The Family Hub switch reboots just the screen.
- Don't open covers on the door beyond the small switch cover. The screen electronics and wiring are inside.
- Mind food safety if cooling is affected. FoodSafety.gov says a refrigerator keeps food safe for up to 4 hours without power. Throw out perishables that have been at 40°F or above for more than 2 hours.
- Avoid a factory reset unless support asks for it. It wipes your Family Hub data.
When to call a pro
This one has a short path. Request service from Samsung (through Samsung's Support Center online, chat, or the Samsung Members app) if:
- 41C appears more than once after an update. That's Samsung's own threshold.
- 41 or 42 is still there after a Family Hub reboot, or keeps coming back.
- The screen stays black or frozen after the switch reset.
- The fridge has stopped cooling at the same time. That's no longer just a screen problem.
- The fridge is under warranty. Let Samsung handle it rather than opening anything up.
There's no meter test or panel removal for a homeowner here. Once the reboot and update steps fail, it's a service call.

FAQ
Is my food safe with a 41 error on my Samsung fridge?
Usually, yes. It's a Family Hub software issue, and Samsung says the fridge keeps its last temperature settings when the panel isn't working. Check that it still feels cold.
Where is the reset switch on a Samsung Family Hub?
Inside the right-hand fridge door, under a small cover at the top right corner of the door. Push the cover up to reach the switch.
What's the difference between 41 and 41C?
Samsung Canada lists 41 (with flashing blue lights) as a Family Hub software issue and 41C as an update issue. The fix for 41 is a screen reboot. For 41C, you tap OK once after the update.
Should I unplug my Samsung fridge to clear 41?
No. Samsung asks owners not to unplug it unless directed. Use the Family Hub switch in the door instead.
