Bosch Dishwasher E24 Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
An E24 code on a Bosch dishwasher means it isn't draining properly because something is blocking the drain path. The usual causes are a dirty filter, a loose pump cover, a kinked drain hose, or a garbage disposal that still has its knockout plug. If you've cleared all of those and E24 keeps coming back, call Bosch.
Bosch's US code list shows this error as E24 or E-24.
This 3-minute fix saved 0 homeowners a technician visit this month.
This page goes deeper on one code. For every other Bosch dishwasher code, see the full guide — or jump back to the E24 row in the code table.
What the E24 code means
Bosch's US support page says E24 means "the dishwasher is not draining properly due to the drain filter being blocked." Bosch UK puts it more simply: "the appliance is not draining properly due to a blockage."
Bosch says you may also notice water pooling at the bottom after a cycle, the dishwasher pausing or stopping, or gurgling or humming noises.
Look-alike codes that mean something else:
- E25 means the drain pump itself is blocked, or its cover is loose or missing. The fix overlaps a lot with E24.
- E22 means the filter is blocked.
- E23 is a drain pump problem. Bosch says to call support for it.
- E15 means water is in the base of the dishwasher. See our Bosch E15 page.
Likely causes (most common first)
- A dirty filter. Bosch lists this as a likely cause. Food and grease build up in the filters at the bottom of the tub.
- A loose pump cover. Bosch says the cover under the filter may be loose.
- A blocked pump. Large food remnants that get past the filters can block the waste water pump, Bosch's manual says. Glass or debris jamming the impeller is common, iFixit adds.
- A kinked or blocked drain hose. Bosch says the hose shouldn't be bent or kinked.
- A clogged air gap, if your sink has one.
- A new garbage disposal with its knockout plug still in. Bosch says installers sometimes forget to remove it.
- A blocked or sealed siphon connection. Bosch's US page says to make sure it's sealed. iFixit's guide finds sludge, debris or a sealed port there.
- A drain pump or control fault. Less common, and a job for a technician.
How to fix it, step by step
Try these in order. Run a short Rinse cycle after each step to see if E24 is gone.
- Cancel the cycle and let it pump out. Bosch's US manual says to press and hold Start for about 3 seconds until the display reads 0:01, wait about a minute while it drains, then open the door and press On/Off. iFixit notes that some models have a Reset 4 Sec. button instead. Check your manual.
- Switch off the power. Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker before you reach into the tub.
- Clean the filters. Lift out the lower rack. Twist the filter lock and lift out the cylindrical filter, then lift out the metal filter, as iFixit shows. Rinse them under running water with mild soap and a soft brush, as Bosch suggests.
- Scoop out standing water with a sponge or towel. iFixit warns not to use an ordinary household wet/dry vacuum for this.
- Clean the drain pump. Bosch's manual explains:
- Use a spoon to pry off the pump cover until it clicks.
- Grip the cover and pull upward until you feel resistance, then pull it forward to remove it.
- Check inside and remove any foreign objects. Bosch warns that some debris may be sharp.
- iFixit suggests spinning the impeller with a gloved finger. It should turn freely.
- Refit the pump cover. Put it back in its original position and press down until it clicks. Bosch says the click shows it's completely closed. A loose cover is one of Bosch's own E24 causes.
- Refit the filters.
- Check the drain hose. Look under the sink for kinks or sharp bends. Bosch's E24 page also says to check that the inlet hose isn't kinked or damaged.
- Check the disposal plug. If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, especially a new one, make sure the plug has been removed from the disposal's dishwasher inlet.
- Clean the air gap, if you have one. Bosch says to turn off the appliance and check it.
- Clear the drain hose. Bosch suggests disconnecting the drain hose, putting the end in a bucket, clearing any debris, then reconnecting it. Then run a Rinse cycle to test.
- Check the siphon connection. This is where the drain hose joins your sink plumbing. Make sure it's sealed properly and isn't blocked. iFixit notes this connection can look different depending on your plumbing.
- Reset the dishwasher. Bosch says to reset the dishwasher and the error code following your owner's manual.
- Stop if E24 returns. If the filter, pump, hose and connections are all clear, call Bosch Customer Service. If you're comfortable with a multimeter, see "Test the part" first.
Test the part
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and turn off the water supply before you open any panel. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
Only try this after you've cleared every part of the drain path. Bosch's own advice is to call support at this point. Testing the drain pump means pulling the dishwasher out and working underneath it, so many owners leave it to a technician.
- Unplug the dishwasher and turn off the water. Switch off the breaker if you can't reach the plug.
- Check the impeller by hand first. With the pump cover off (see step 5 above), spin the impeller with a gloved finger. It should turn freely. If it's stiff or jammed and you can't clear it, the pump may be damaged.
- Get to the pump. PartSelect says the pump is usually behind the lower access panel. On many built-in Bosch models, though, iFixit's guide shows you'll need to unscrew the dishwasher from the counter and slide it out. Have towels ready.
- Photograph the wires, then disconnect the pump's connector.
- Check the pump for continuity. Set the meter to the lowest ohms range and touch the probes to the pump's two terminals. PartSelect says a good pump shows continuity (a reading at or near zero). Then touch one probe to a terminal and the other to bare metal on the pump. That should show no reading. If either result is wrong, the pump needs replacing.
- Don't rely on a specific number. Bosch doesn't publish pump readings for owners, and they vary by model. Check your model's tech sheet.
- Stop and call a pro if the pump tests fine but E24 persists, if you can't reach the pump, or if you'd need to remove internal parts.
Never test parts with the dishwasher plugged in.
Safety notes
- Switch off the power before you reach into the sump, remove the pump cover or touch any hose.
- Watch for sharp debris. Bosch warns that some debris in the pump may be sharp. Wear gloves.
- Use caution opening the door during or right after a cycle. Bosch warns hot water or steam may escape.
- Turn off the water before you disconnect any hose, and keep a bucket and towels handy.
- Never use a household vacuum to suck up water. iFixit says only use one rated for liquids.
- Get help moving the dishwasher. It's heavy, and the hoses and power cable must be disconnected first.
When to call a pro
Call Bosch Customer Service at 1-800-944-2904 or a qualified technician if:
- E24 comes back after you've cleaned the filters and pump and checked the hose, siphon and disposal.
- The impeller is damaged or won't turn after you've cleared it.
- You see E23, which Bosch says needs support.
- Water is leaking onto the floor.
- Your dishwasher is under warranty. Bosch's manual warns that work by unauthorized personnel may void the warranty.
Have your model number (E-Nr) and production number (FD) ready. Bosch suggests writing them on your owner's manual.

FAQ
What does E24 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
Bosch says it means the dishwasher isn't draining properly due to a blockage. The filter, pump cover, drain hose or disposal plug are the usual suspects.
What's the difference between E24 and E25?
E24 means the drain path is blocked. E25 means the drain pump itself is blocked, or its cover is loose. Bosch's fixes overlap, so clean the pump either way.
My Bosch is new and shows E24. Why?
If it drains into a garbage disposal, check that the knockout plug was removed from the disposal. Bosch says installers sometimes forget.
How do I reset E24 on a Bosch dishwasher?
Fix the blockage first. Then cancel the cycle as your manual describes (on many models, hold Start for about 3 seconds) and let it drain.
Can I use my dishwasher with an E24 code?
Not until it drains. Dirty water will stay in the tub, and the cycle will keep stopping.
