GE Dishwasher FTD Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
An FTD code on a GE dishwasher means "failure to drain": the dishwasher didn't get the water out at the end of a wash or rinse. Most of the time the cause is a blockage you can clear yourself, such as a dirty filter, a kinked drain hose, a clogged air gap, or a new garbage disposal with its plug still in place. If the drain path is clear and the code keeps coming back, the drain pump or a sensor may need a technician.
GE lists FTD and F56 together as "failure to drain." Some models show C3, which GE describes as "the dishwasher will not drain."

What the FTD code means
GE Appliances' code list says FTD or F56 means "Failure to drain. The dishwasher did not drain." GE's advice is to check the drain hose, the air gap and the disposer, then work through its "Not Draining" guide.
C3 is GE's code for "the dishwasher will not drain." GE's first step for C3 is a power reset: switch off the breaker for about 30 seconds, then reset the dishwasher. If it persists, GE says to contact service. Since it's the same problem, the drain checks below apply to C3 too.
What's normal: GE says some water left in the bottom is expected. On models without an Ultra Fine filter, 1 to 2 cups of clean water covering the bottom of the tub is normal. On models with an Ultra Fine filter, water in the filter area is normal, but it shouldn't cover the bottom of the tub.
Look-alike codes:
- C1 means a pump-out took longer than 2 minutes. C2 means the total pump-out time went over 7 minutes. Both point to a slow drain, not a failed one.
- PrS means the pressure sensor is sending an invalid signal. GE says service is recommended.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Clogged filters or a blocked sump. Food, paper or a large object can cover the drain area at the back of the tub floor.
- A kinked or blocked drain hose under the sink. GE says reused old hoses are more likely to kink.
- A clogged sink drain or garbage disposal.
- A dirty air gap (the small chrome cap by the faucet, if you have one).
- A new disposal with its drain plug still in. GE says to make sure it was removed.
- Too much detergent, or the wrong kind. GE says over-sudsing can stop the dishwasher draining properly.
- No high loop in the drain hose. GE says that without an air gap, the hose must have a high loop fixed under the counter at the height in your installation instructions.
- A jammed or failed drain pump, or a stuck check valve.
- A dirty or failed pressure sensor. Parts Dr says this can trigger FTD even when the dishwasher has actually drained, because the control thinks water is still in the tub.
How to fix it, step by step
Try these in order. Run a short cycle after each step to see if FTD clears.
- Reset the power. Switch off the dishwasher's breaker for about 30 seconds, then turn it back on. GE says disconnecting power for a minute or two sometimes clears a code. If it comes back, keep going.
- Clear the tub floor. Remove the bottom rack. Take out any paper, labels or large food (GE mentions noodles, lettuce and bones) covering the sump at the back.
- Clean the filters, if your model has them. GE's steps:
- Twist the Ultra Fine Filter counterclockwise and lift it out.
- Twist the two retaining posts at the back counterclockwise and lift out the Fine Filter.
- Rinse both in warm soapy water with a sponge or soft brush. GE says scouring pads can damage them.
- Refit both filters and turn the posts clockwise to lock them.
- Some GE models have self-cleaning filtration with no removable filter. Check your manual.
- Run the garbage disposal to clear the drain. GE says never put your hand in the disposer.
- Check the disposal plug. If the disposal is new or was replaced, make sure its drain plug was removed. The disposal's installation instructions show how.
- Clean the air gap. Lift off the chrome cover, unscrew the plastic cap, and clear out any debris. Rinse the cap. Check the hose from the air gap to the sink drain or disposal too.
- Check the drain hose. Look under the sink for kinks or a crushed section where it connects. If there's no air gap, make sure the hose has its high loop at the right height.
- Check the sink drain. GE says to make sure the kitchen sink drain isn't clogged. Clear the household drain first if it is.
- Check your detergent. Use only automatic dishwasher detergent, in the right amount. Hand dish soap makes suds that can stop draining.
- Don't use drain cleaner in the dishwasher. GE warns against it.
- Run a cycle and watch. If the tub still holds water, or FTD returns even though the tub is empty, see "Test the part" or call a pro.
Test the part
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and turn off the water supply before you open any panel. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
If the drain path is clear but FTD keeps coming back, the likely parts are the drain pump and, on some models, a check valve. PartSelect notes that GE dishwashers drain in different ways. Some use a separate drain pump, and others use the main pump with a drain valve. Check your model's parts diagram first.
- Turn off the breaker (or unplug the dishwasher) and turn off the water. Have towels ready for water in the hoses.
- Remove the lower access panel (kick plate). PartSelect says the drain pump is usually behind it.
- Look before you measure. Check the pump's inlet and outlet for food or debris. Check the drain hose where it leaves the pump for kinks or blockages.
- Inspect the check valve, if fitted. PartSelect says it usually sits on the pump's outlet. The flapper should be undamaged and move freely, with no debris holding it.
- Photograph the wires, then disconnect the pump's wires.
- Check the pump for continuity. Set the meter to the lowest ohms range and touch the probes to the pump's two terminals. PartSelect says you should see continuity (a reading at or near zero). Then touch one probe to a terminal and the other to the bare metal housing. That should show no reading. If either result is wrong, the pump needs replacing.
- If the tub is empty but FTD still shows, the pressure sensor may be dirty or failed, according to Parts Dr. GE says its PrS code means a sensor or harness problem and recommends service, so leave sensor diagnosis to a technician.
- Stop and call a pro if the pump tests fine and the drain path is clear, if you can't reach the pump, or if you'd need to remove the dishwasher from the cabinet.
Don't run a test cycle with the access panel off or any wiring disconnected.
Safety notes
- Switch off the breaker (or unplug the dishwasher) before reaching into the sump or removing the kick plate.
- Never put your hand in the garbage disposal.
- Watch for sharp debris. Broken glass often ends up in the sump.
- Turn off the water before you disconnect any hose.
- Don't use chemical drain cleaner in the dishwasher.
- No live electrical tests. Checking whether the pump gets power during the drain is a job for a technician.
When to call a pro
Schedule GE Appliances service or call a qualified technician if:
- FTD, F56 or C3 returns after you've cleaned the filters and cleared the air gap, hose and disposal.
- The pump tests as open, or shows a reading to its metal housing.
- The tub drains but FTD still shows, or you see a PrS code.
- You have a portable dishwasher that connects to the faucet with a unicouple. GE says those need service for drain problems.
- Your dishwasher is under warranty. Check the terms before opening it.

FAQ
What does FTD mean on a GE dishwasher?
GE says FTD (or F56) means failure to drain: the dishwasher didn't drain. Check the drain hose, air gap and disposer first.
Is C3 the same as FTD?
They point to the same problem. GE describes C3 as "the dishwasher will not drain." Try a breaker reset first, then the same drain checks.
Why does my GE dishwasher show FTD when it drains fine?
The control may be getting a wrong water-level reading. Parts Dr says a dirty or failed pressure sensor is a common cause. A technician can confirm it.
How do I reset FTD on a GE dishwasher?
Switch the breaker off for about 30 seconds, then back on. Clear the cause first, or the code will come back.
Is some water in the bottom normal?
Yes. GE says 1 to 2 cups of clean water is normal on models without an Ultra Fine filter. On models with one, water should stay in the filter area.
