Frigidaire Dehumidifier AS Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
AS on a Frigidaire dehumidifier means a sensor has failed — Frigidaire's support guide says a temperature or humidity sensor. The sensors sit inside the cabinet, so this is normally a service repair rather than a homeowner fix.
Some models show ES instead; Frigidaire's manuals treat AS and ES the same way. A restart and a couple of quick checks are worth a few minutes, but if the code returns, call service. DIY at your own risk.
About 3 minutes, no tools. If AS clears and stays gone, you're done.
- Turn it off, then unplug it. Press ON/OFF first, then pull the plug by the plug body.
- Wait a minute. Leave it unplugged for at least a minute.
- Plug it directly into the wall. No extension cord or adapter plug — Frigidaire's manuals say not to use them. Use a grounded three-prong outlet.
- Check the room. Make sure it's within your manual's operating temperature range and the unit has the clearance your manual lists (12 or 18 inches, depending on model).
- Restart once. Give it a few minutes — many Frigidaire models have a built-in 3-minute compressor delay after a restart.
If AS comes right back, unplug the unit and go to When to call a pro.
This 3-minute fix saved 0 homeowners a technician visit this month.

What the AS code means
Frigidaire's use-and-care manuals say that if the display reads "AS" or "ES", a sensor has failed, and to contact your Authorized Frigidaire Service Center. Frigidaire's online Dehumidifiers Error Code Guide groups AS, ES, F1, F2, L1 and F5 together as "a temperature or humidity sensor has failed" and says to contact Frigidaire for further assistance.
The humidity reading is what lets the unit display room humidity and shut off once your chosen setting is reached. AS or ES means the control has flagged one of its sensors as failed.
Frigidaire's documents don't list any owner reset or fix for AS. The restart in Try This First is a harmless general step, not an official cure.
Look-alikes that mean something else:
- EC / F0 — sealed system failure (refrigeration side), not a sensor code.
- PU — the pump didn't empty the bucket in time (pump models).
- CO — on many Frigidaire models this simply means the unit is in CONTINUOUS mode, per the use-and-care manual. Not an error.
- BUCKET FULL light — empty and reseat the bucket.
Likely causes (most common first)
- A failed temperature or humidity sensor. This is what Frigidaire says the code means.
- A one-time control glitch. Occasionally a code clears after a restart and doesn't return. If it comes back, assume the sensor.
- Sensor wiring or connection problem. Inside the cabinet — for a technician to diagnose.
- Control board fault. Possible, but don't buy one yourself; a technician should confirm the sensor first.
How to fix it, step by step
Restart and check for AS after each step.
- Turn the unit off with ON/OFF, then unplug it. Frigidaire's manuals say not to start or stop the unit by pulling the plug, so switch off first.
- Confirm the code.
- AS or ES: keep going.
- F1, F2, L1 or F5: Frigidaire lists these as the same sensor-failure family. For F1, F2 and L1, one Frigidaire manual says to turn off and unplug, plug back in after 30 minutes, and call service if it happens again.
- CO: that's Continuous mode, not an error.
- Use a proper outlet. Plug straight into a grounded three-prong wall outlet — no extension cords or adapter plugs.
- Check room conditions. Make sure the room is within your manual's operating range (Frigidaire manuals vary — 41–96 °F in an older guide, 41–89 °F in a newer one).
- Clean the filter.
- Remove it as your manual shows (behind the bucket or the back grille, depending on model).
- Rinse it in clean water, let it dry, and reinstall it.
- Restart once. Wait a few minutes for the compressor delay.
- If AS returns, stop. Leave it unplugged. The sensor is inside the cabinet, and Frigidaire's manuals say there are no user-serviceable parts. Go to When to call a pro.
Test the part
Unplug the dehumidifier before emptying the bucket, cleaning the filter, or opening any panel. Wipe spills immediately — standing water can warp floors and feed mold. Never open or puncture the sealed refrigerant system (EC / sealed-system codes need EPA Section 608–certified service). Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
There's no safe homeowner meter test for the AS sensor. It's inside the cabinet, and Frigidaire doesn't publish an owner test or resistance values. Visual checks only:
- Unplug the dehumidifier.
- Look at the cord and plug. If either is damaged, don't use the unit — Frigidaire says a damaged cord should be replaced only by an authorized servicer.
- Look at the intake grille and filter for heavy dust or debris.
- Note when the code appears (right at startup, or after hours of running) and tell the technician — it helps diagnosis.
- Do not open the cabinet or try to unplug or replace the sensor yourself.
If everything looks normal and AS persists, schedule service.
Safety notes
- DIY at your own risk. Stop and unplug if you're unsure.
- Unplug first before touching anything beyond the buttons, bucket, or filter.
- No extension cords or adapter plugs.
- No live voltage testing, and no wiring repairs.
- Sparks or burning smell: Frigidaire says to stop the unit, disconnect the power cord, and call an authorized servicer.
- Refrigerant stays sealed. Anything involving the sealed system needs an EPA Section 608–certified technician.
- Watch for dampness. With the unit out of action, a damp basement can get worse. Visible mold or warped flooring needs remediation or flooring pros.
- Don't drink the bucket water.
When to call a pro
Call for service when:
- AS (or ES) returns after one restart on a proper outlet in a normal room. Frigidaire's own instruction for this code is to contact service.
- Diagnosis would mean opening the cabinet. Sensor and wiring checks need panel removal and the service information for your model.
- You see a damaged cord, sparks, or smell burning.
- The unit is under warranty. Let an authorized servicer handle it.
Frigidaire's support guide says units installed within the past 30 days should go back to the installer; after 30 days, contact Frigidaire to schedule service (start at owner.frigidaire.com).

FAQ
What does AS mean on a Frigidaire dehumidifier?
A sensor has failed. Frigidaire's guide says a temperature or humidity sensor, and to contact them for service.
Is ES different from AS?
Frigidaire's manuals treat AS and ES the same way — a sensor has failed — and the online guide lists both in the same group.
Can I reset the AS code?
A single off-unplug-restart is harmless to try, but Frigidaire doesn't list a reset. If AS returns, call service.
Can I keep using the dehumidifier with AS showing?
Frigidaire's instruction for AS is to contact service, not to keep running it. Unplug it and arrange a repair.
