Frigidaire Dehumidifier PU Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
PU on a Frigidaire dehumidifier means the built-in pump failed to pump out the bucket in the allotted time. The good news: Frigidaire's own fix list starts with things you can check in minutes — the pump drain hose and the bucket pickup.
If those checks and a restart don't clear it, the pump itself may need service. DIY at your own risk — unplug before handling the bucket or hose, and stop if you're unsure.
About 3 minutes, no tools. If PU clears, you're done.
- Turn it off and unplug it. Press ON/OFF first, then pull the plug by the plug body.
- Check the hose connection. Make sure the pump drain hose is firmly pushed onto the unit's pump drain joint.
- Walk the hose. Look for kinks, crushed spots, or anything blocking the far end. In a cold space, check that it isn't frozen.
- Empty the bucket and look at the pickup. Remove the bucket, empty it, and check the pump pickup in the bucket for dirt or algae.
- Reseat the bucket, plug in, and restart. Turn the unit back on under normal conditions.
If PU comes back right away, keep going with the steps below.

What the PU code means
Frigidaire's Dehumidifiers Error Code Guide lists PU — Failure to pump out bucket in allotted time. In pump mode, the unit pumps automatically once the bucket fills. PU means that didn't happen in time, so water isn't leaving the bucket the way it should.
Frigidaire's checks for PU, in its own order: make sure the pump drain hose is well connected; check that the hose isn't blocked, kinked or frozen; remove and empty the bucket to check the bucket pickup for dirt or algae; turn off and restart under normal operating conditions; unplug and plug in again under normal operating conditions. If that doesn't fix it, contact Frigidaire.
PU usually comes down to the hose or the pickup, so it's worth working through those checks calmly before you book a service call.
Not pumping but no PU? A Frigidaire pump-model manual notes the unit won't pump until the bucket reaches the full point, and the pump has to be turned on with the PUMP button.
Look-alikes that mean something else:
- BUCKET FULL light — the bucket is full (bucket mode). Empty and reseat it.
- EC / F0 — sealed system failure. A service call.
- AS / ES — a temperature or humidity sensor has failed.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Hose not fully connected at the pump drain joint.
- Kinked, crushed, or blocked hose. Including a hose end pushed under water or debris.
- Frozen hose in a cold basement, garage, or when run through a window in winter.
- Dirt or algae at the bucket pickup. Frigidaire specifically calls this out.
- Hose run too long or too high. One Frigidaire pump-model manual says the maximum distance and rise may be 5 m from the unit, and exceeding it may damage the unit or cause leaks. Check your manual's limit.
- Pump or pump-circuit fault. If everything above checks out, the pump may need service.
How to fix it, step by step
Unplug before handling the bucket or hose. Restart and check for PU after each step.
- Turn the unit off with ON/OFF, then unplug it.
- Reconnect the hose properly.
- Follow your manual: on Frigidaire pump models you press the tightening ring on the drainage joint to release or insert the hose.
- Push the hose on until it's fully seated.
- Straighten the hose. Remove kinks and make sure nothing is resting on it.
- Check the hose end. Make sure it goes to a floor drain, a container with room in it, or outdoors, and that the end isn't blocked.
- Thaw a frozen hose. If the hose is frozen, move it to a warmer spot and let it thaw naturally. Don't use a heat gun or open flame.
- Clean the bucket and pickup.
- Remove the bucket and empty it. Discard the water — Frigidaire says it isn't drinkable.
- Clean the bucket with warm water and detergent, as Frigidaire's manuals advise.
- On models with a pump filter, Frigidaire says to clean it when you clean the bucket.
- Shorten the run if needed. Bring the hose within your manual's distance and rise limit.
- Reseat the bucket. Push it in until it's properly seated.
- Restart under normal conditions. Plug in, turn on, and make sure pump mode is on.
- If PU returns, stop. The pump may be at fault. Go to When to call a pro.
Test the part
Unplug the dehumidifier before emptying the bucket, cleaning the filter, or opening any panel. Wipe spills immediately — standing water can warp floors and feed mold. Never open or puncture the sealed refrigerant system (EC / sealed-system codes need EPA Section 608–certified service). Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
There's no safe homeowner meter test for the pump — it's inside the unit, and Frigidaire's manuals say there are no user-serviceable parts. Visual checks only:
- Unplug the dehumidifier.
- Inspect the hose end to end for cracks, kinks, flattening, or ice.
- Check the connection at the drainage joint for a full, snug fit and no leaks.
- Look at the bucket pickup for slime, algae, or debris, and clean it as above.
- Do not open the cabinet or try to remove or test the pump.
If the hose and pickup look clean and PU keeps returning, schedule service.
Safety notes
- DIY at your own risk. Stop and unplug if you're unsure.
- Unplug before handling the bucket or hose. Keep water away from the plug and outlet.
- No extension cords or adapter plugs — grounded three-prong outlet only.
- No live electrical tests and no wiring repairs.
- Don't drink the bucket water.
- Water damage: wipe up spills fast. Warped flooring or visible mold needs flooring or mold remediation pros.
- Refrigerant stays sealed. Anything involving the sealed system needs an EPA Section 608–certified technician.
When to call a pro
Call for service when:
- PU returns after you've checked the hose, cleaned the pickup, and restarted. That points to the pump or its circuit.
- Fixing it would mean opening the cabinet. The pump is inside the unit.
- Water is leaking from inside the unit, not just from the hose connection.
- The unit is under warranty.
Frigidaire's support guide says that for units installed within the past 30 days, go back to your installer; after 30 days, contact Frigidaire to schedule service (start at owner.frigidaire.com). In the meantime, you can usually run the unit in bucket mode and empty the bucket by hand — check your manual, and remember to put the drain plug back in so it doesn't leak.

FAQ
What does PU mean on a Frigidaire dehumidifier?
The pump failed to pump out the bucket in the allotted time. Check the hose and bucket pickup first.
Why would my dehumidifier hose freeze?
If it runs through a cold space or out a window in winter, water in the hose can freeze and block the pump. Frigidaire lists a frozen hose as a PU check.
How do I clean the bucket pickup?
Empty the bucket, then clean the bucket with warm water and detergent and clear any dirt or algae from the pickup. Clean the pump filter too if your model has one.
Can I still use the dehumidifier with PU?
Frigidaire's pump-model manual describes removing the hose to use bucket mode (with the drain plug reinserted), so you can usually empty the bucket by hand until it's repaired. Check your manual first.
