GE Washer 26 Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
Code 26 on a GE top-load washer (GTW models) means the load was out of balance during the final spin, so the washer couldn't spin at full speed. It's usually a loading or leveling problem you can fix yourself: spread the clothes out, level the washer, and run Drain & Spin. If it keeps happening with balanced loads, there may be a mechanical problem that needs a technician.
This page goes deeper on one code. For every other GE washer code, see the full guide — or jump back to the 26 row in the code table.
What the 26 code means
According to Sears PartsDirect's guide to GE GTW top-load washers, code 26 means out of balance during the final spin. Sears lists code 31 for the same condition on these washers.
GE's own owner's manuals and support pages that we checked don't list numbered codes like 26. They do explain what happens when a top-loader detects an out-of-balance (OOB) load, which is the same problem:
- The washer goes into redistribution. It slows down, stops, adds water, and agitates to move the clothes into a better position. The Spin light may flash, and some models show bALAnCINg on the display.
- If redistribution doesn't work, GE says the washer may try again (how many times depends on the model) and then end the cycle early, leaving the clothes wet.
So if you find code 26 with a soggy load, the washer did its job. It stopped spinning to protect itself because it couldn't balance the load.
Sears PartsDirect says GTW error codes blink on the washer's digital display. How codes appear can vary by model, so check your owner's manual or the tech sheet.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Clothes bunched on one side. Very common with sheets, towels, and bulky items that tangle or soak up water unevenly.
- Mixed loads. GE notes that towels and delicates absorb very different amounts of water, which can throw the load out of balance once wet.
- Bulky or waterproof items washed on the wrong cycle, such as bath mats, mattress pads, or large coats.
- Washer not level, or a leg not firmly on the floor. GE says an unlevel washer increases OOB events.
- Drain hose too far into the standpipe. GE says siphoning can pull water out and increase OOB events.
- Water supply problems. GE says both hot and cold hoses must be connected, and low water pressure can increase OOB events.
- Something stuck between the basket and tub, or a basket that doesn't turn freely.
- Mechanical or wiring problem. Sears PartsDirect mentions a loose wire harness between the motor and the control board. Other mechanical faults need a technician to diagnose.
How to fix it, step by step
Try these in order, and run a Drain & Spin after each step to check.
- Stop the cycle and rebalance by hand. Press Pause (or Power to stop) and wait for the lid to unlock. Spread the wet clothes evenly around the basket and untangle sheets and towels.
- Run Drain & Spin. GE's advice for an out-of-balance load is to redistribute it and run a Drain & Spin cycle.
- Load evenly next time. GE recommends loading dry items loosely and evenly around the outside of the basket, filling toward the center on bigger loads.
- On agitator or infusor models, divide the load evenly around the center, like quadrants.
- On infusor models, don't drape sheets, blankets, or towels across the infusor. You should be able to see the center before you start.
- Wash similar items together. Don't mix heavy towels with light delicates.
- Use the right cycle for big items. GE's manual says to use the Bulky cycle for water-resistant items, bedding, and bulky items like large coats, mattress pads, and bath mats.
- Use Deep Rinse if your washer has it. GE says it adds water, which helps with items that tend to get out of balance.
- Check that the washer is level.
- Sears PartsDirect suggests placing your hands on the corners and trying to rock the washer gently. If it rocks, adjust the legs.
- GE's manual says to put a level on the top and adjust all four legs until it's level side to side and front to back, with every leg firmly on the floor.
- Check the drain hose. GE says it shouldn't go more than 6 inches into the standpipe, and it shouldn't fit snugly. There needs to be space for air around it.
- Check both water hoses. Both hot and cold must be connected, even if you only wash in cold.
- Stop if 26 keeps coming back with balanced loads. See "Test the part" for some simple checks, or call a pro.
Test the part
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and turn off the water supply before you open any panel. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
Code 26 isn't usually a part you can test with a multimeter. These are visual and by-hand checks, adapted from Sears PartsDirect's advice for this code.
- Unplug the washer. Pull the plug or switch off the breaker. Turn off the water taps if you'll be moving the washer.
- Empty the basket. Take out all the laundry.
- Turn the basket by hand. With the lid open, rotate the spin basket slowly. It should turn smoothly with no grinding, binding, or tight spots.
- Look for trapped items. If the basket binds, check for anything caught between the basket and the outer tub, like a sock, bra wire, or coin. If you can't see or reach it, stop and call a pro. Don't pry with tools.
- Check the motor wiring (only if you're comfortable removing panels). Sears PartsDirect says that if the basket turns smoothly, check the wire harness connection between the motor and the electronic control board, and reconnect any loose wires. How you reach it varies by model, so check your tech sheet. Photograph connectors before you touch them, and watch for sharp edges.
- Stop there. Tests on the motor, speed sensor, or control board involve live voltage or special procedures. They're not DIY jobs.
Safety notes
- Unplug the washer before you put your hands in the basket or remove any panel.
- Wait for the basket to stop completely before opening the lid. Never reach into a moving basket.
- Wet laundry is heavy. Lift a waterlogged load in parts.
- Get help moving the washer to level it, and keep the water hoses from kinking.
- No live electrical tests. Stick to unplugged checks.
- Watch for sharp sheet-metal edges if you remove panels.
When to call a pro
Call GE Appliances service or a qualified appliance technician if:
- Code 26 keeps coming back even with balanced, mixed-size loads and a level washer.
- The basket grinds, binds, or won't turn smoothly by hand.
- Something is stuck between the basket and tub and you can't get it out.
- The tub bangs hard against the cabinet even with a balanced load.
- The washer won't spin even with an empty basket.
- Your washer is under warranty. Check the terms before opening any panels.

FAQ
What does 26 mean on a GE washer?
On GE GTW top-loaders, it means the load was out of balance during the final spin, per Sears PartsDirect. GE's own pages describe the same out-of-balance behavior.
How do I clear code 26 on my GE washer?
Spread the load out evenly, then run a Drain & Spin cycle. If it comes back, level the washer and check the drain hose.
Why are my clothes still wet after a GE washer cycle?
GE says the most common reason is an out-of-balance load. If redistribution fails, the washer ends the cycle early and leaves the clothes wet.
Is a flashing Spin light the same problem?
It's related. GE says a blinking Spin light means the washer detected an out-of-balance load and is trying to correct it.
Does code 26 mean my washer is broken?
Usually not. Most of the time it's how the load was arranged or how the washer is leveled. Call a pro if it happens with balanced loads.
