Insignia Washer E4 Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
An E4 code on an Insignia top-load washer means the washer went out of balance more than three times while spinning, so it stopped trying. Most of the time it's something you can fix yourself in a few minutes: a lopsided or awkward load, a washer that isn't level, or something touching or stuck under the cabinet. If E4 keeps coming back with normal loads on a level washer, a part inside may be worn and it's time for service.
This page covers one code. See every Insignia washer code we cover on our Washer error codes page.
What the E4 code means
Insignia's user guide for the top-load washer NS-WMT41WA5 describes E4 as: "Your washer is out of balance more than three times in spin operation." The guide's fix is to work through its "My washer vibrates or is too noisy" checks, then contact Insignia Customer Care if that doesn't solve it.
If the clothes pile up on one side during spin, the washer stops and tries up to three times to correct it on its own. An occasional pause during spin is normal. E4 means those retries failed.
The guide also warns that a washer that isn't level can show E3 or E4 while running.
Look-alike codes on the same washer mean something else:
- E5 means "Impact switch failed, your washer is not leveled." The guide's fix is to level the washer, then contact Customer Care.
- E3 means Start/Pause was pressed with the lid not fully closed.
Codes vary by model, and this guide covers the NS-WMT41WA5 only. If your model is different, check your own user guide's error code table.
Likely causes (most common first)
- An unbalanced load. Clothes bunched on one side, or one bulky item with nothing to balance it.
- A very small load. Insignia says very small loads (one or two items) may become unbalanced and not spin out completely.
- Overloading. The guide says to fill the tub no more than 3/4 full with dry, unfolded clothes. Maximum dry load weight is 16.6 lb (7.5 kg).
- Items the washer shouldn't spin. Insignia warns against waterproof items, thick hard mats, throw rugs and doormats.
- The washer isn't level, or rocks on its feet. Insignia links an unlevel washer directly to E3/E4 codes.
- Soft or weak flooring. Insignia says carpet and soft tile can cause excess vibration, and wooden floors may need reinforcing.
- The washer is touching something, like a wall, a laundry sink or the dryer next to it.
- Leftover packaging, such as pieces of the foam base cushion stuck under the washer.
- Worn suspension parts. On many top-loaders, worn suspension rods let the tub bounce instead of settling. Insignia's guide doesn't cover this, so treat it as a service item.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. After each step, run a Rinse & Spin cycle to see whether E4 comes back.
- Turn the washer off with the Power button. If the tub is still moving, wait for it to stop completely before you open the lid or reach in.
- Redistribute the load. Spread the clothes evenly around the tub and untangle anything twisted into a rope (sheets are the usual culprit).
- Balance a small or bulky load. For one big item or just a few small ones, Insignia recommends adding a few towels. Use the Bulky/Bedding cycle for bulky items.
- Take some out if it's overloaded. Keep it to no more than 3/4 full of dry, loosely loaded clothes.
- Remove waterproof items, hard mats and rugs. Insignia says not to wash them in this washer.
- Make sure nothing is touching the washer. For alcove installs, Insignia calls for at least 1 in. (2.5 cm) on each side.
- Check for packaging under the washer. Use a flashlight. Don't put your hand or a metal object under the washer, which Insignia warns can cause injury. To clear something, unplug the washer and get a helper to tilt it.
- Level the washer. Insignia ties an unlevel washer directly to E4.
- Open the lid and look down from above. The tub should sit centered in the cabinet. If it doesn't, adjust the front feet.
- Side to side: put a level on top of the washer, behind the lid.
- Front to back: slide thin, stiff cardboard (like the back of a legal pad) into the seam between the top and side panels on each side, and rest the level on the cardboard.
- Tilt the washer just enough to reach the feet and turn them to raise or lower it. Extend them only as far as needed, because Insignia warns that over-extended feet can cause vibration.
- Push or rock the top edges gently. If it rocks, adjust the feet again until all four sit firmly on the floor.
- Check the floor. On carpet, soft tile or a springy wooden floor, the washer may never stay stable. Move it to a solid, level floor.
- Run a test cycle. Insignia's installation test is about 6 lb (2.7 kg) of laundry on Rinse & Spin. The washer shouldn't rock or vibrate excessively.
- Stop and call for service if E4 still comes back with a normal, evenly spread load on a level washer. See "Test the part" below for a quick visual check you can do first.
Test the part
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and turn off the water supply before you open any panel. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
There's no multimeter test for E4. It's a balance problem, not a failed circuit. These unplugged checks show whether the problem is the installation or something inside.
- Unplug the washer. Pull the plug, holding the plug rather than the cord. Insignia notes that pressing Power doesn't disconnect the washer from the power supply.
- Check the feet. Push down on each corner. Any corner that dips or rocks needs adjusting (see step 8 above).
- Do the push-down test on the empty tub. Press the wash basket down firmly and let go, then push it side to side. iFixit's guide to top-load bouncing says a healthy suspension snaps back to center quickly. If it keeps bouncing or swinging, worn suspension rods are a common cause.
- Check that the tub hangs centered. With the washer level, the tub should sit in the middle of the cabinet opening when you look down from above. A tub that leans to one side even on a level washer points to a suspension problem.
If the tub bounces or leans, stop there. Suspension repairs mean taking the cabinet apart, the parts depend on your model, and Insignia doesn't publish a user repair. Contact Insignia Customer Care or an appliance technician.
Safety notes
- Don't reach into the washer while the tub is moving. Press Start/Pause and wait for it to stop completely.
- Unplug before you tilt or move the washer, and don't handle the plug with wet hands.
- It's heavy. Insignia lists it at 130 lb (59 kg). Get a helper before you tilt it.
- Keep hands and metal objects out from under the washer.
- Don't keep running it with violent shaking. Insignia warns that an abnormal out-of-balance condition can cause injury, property damage, or damage to the washer.
When to call a pro
Contact Insignia Customer Care or a qualified appliance technician if:
- E4 keeps coming back with normal, evenly spread loads on a level washer with nothing touching it.
- The tub keeps bouncing, swings, or leans after the push-down test.
- The washer shows E5 (impact switch failed) and leveling doesn't clear it.
- Your washer is still under warranty. Insignia's limited warranty runs one year from purchase (or delivery, if later). Its terms exclude damage from repairs by anyone Insignia hasn't authorized, so check with Insignia before you open the cabinet.

FAQ
What does E4 mean on an Insignia washer?
It means the washer went out of balance more than three times during spin and couldn't fix it on its own.
How do I clear the E4 code?
Press Power to turn the washer off, spread the load evenly (add a few towels to small or bulky loads), check that the washer is level, then run a Rinse & Spin.
Can an unlevel washer cause E4?
Yes. Insignia's guide says a washer that isn't level can show E3 or E4 while it's running.
Why does E4 happen with just one or two items?
Very small loads can't spread out evenly, so the tub can't balance. Insignia suggests adding a few towels.
