Haier Washer E2 Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
An E2 code on a Haier washer means the door or lid isn't closed, or the washer can't lock it. Often it's something simple, like clothing caught in the door, a lid that isn't fully shut, or a latch blocked by lint or detergent. If the door closes properly and E2 keeps coming back, the lock or lid switch has probably failed and needs a repair.
On some Haier models the same problem shows as Err1, dO, or E0, depending on the washer.
This page covers one code. See every Haier washer code we cover on our Washer error codes page.
What the E2 code means
What E2 means depends on the type of Haier washer:
- Combination washer/dryers (US): Haier's US code chart says E2 means the washer "cannot lock the door after 20 seconds." The same chart also lists Err1, "door not closed," which some combos show instead. Haier's fix for that is to make sure the door closes properly and the latch closes completely, and it notes service may be required.
- Portable (compact top-load) washers (US): Haier says dO, E0, or E2 means the lid switch is detected as open. The fix is to make sure the lid is closed properly.
- Top-load washers in other regions: Haier's India and New Zealand top-load guides say E2 means the top lid isn't closed. The fix is to close the lid and press Start/Pause once.
- Door-lock washers in other regions: Haier's UAE page calls E2 a "lock error" and says to shut the door properly.
We couldn't find a Haier US code list for full-size top-load washers. If you have one, check the owner's manual for your model number at haierappliances.com/support/manuals.
Look-alike codes:
- dd on a Haier US portable washer isn't actually an error. If it shows during spin, Haier says to check that the lid is closed and the load is balanced.
- E2-1 appears in Haier's New Zealand top-load manual as a "door lock alarm" that needs Customer Care. We didn't find it on Haier's US pages.
What happens after E2. On the New Zealand top-load model, forcing the lid open during a wash triggers E2. The washer stops, then drains automatically after 10 seconds. Close the lid and press Start/Pause to carry on. Other models may behave differently.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Door or lid not fully closed. It may look shut but not be latched.
- Clothing caught in the door or lid. A sleeve or sock trapped in the door seal on a combo stops it from latching.
- Lid opened mid-cycle. On top-loaders, lifting the lid during a wash triggers E2.
- Dirty or blocked latch. Lint, detergent residue, or a small object in the latch or strike stops it from engaging.
- Washer not level, or door out of alignment. The strike on the door may miss the latch.
- Bent or broken door strike or lid actuator. The tab or hook on the door or lid that presses the switch can bend or snap.
- Failed door lock (combos) or lid switch (top-loaders). On a combo, Haier says service is required for E2.
- Wiring or control fault. Less common, and a job for a technician.
How to fix it, step by step
Try a cycle again after each step.
- Close the door or lid firmly. On a combo, push it until you hear the latch click. On a top-loader, check that nothing is propping the lid up.
- Press Start/Pause once more. Haier's top-load guides say to close the lid and press Start/Pause once.
- Check for trapped clothing. Open the door and run your hand around the seal. Push any items fully into the drum.
- Reset the washer. Unplug it (or switch off the breaker) for 1 minute, then plug it back in and start a cycle. If E2 shows straight away, the problem is still there.
- Clean the latch and strike.
- Unplug the washer first.
- Wipe the door strike (the hook or tab on the door) and the latch opening with a damp cloth.
- Use a soft brush to clear lint or detergent residue. Don't poke metal tools into the latch.
- Check the strike or actuator. Look for a bent, cracked, or loose hook or tab on the door or lid. If it's damaged, the part needs replacing.
- Check the washer is level. If the washer rocks or the door sags, adjust the leveling feet so all four sit firmly on the floor. Haier says portables need all four legs supporting weight.
- Suspect the lock or lid switch. If the door closes and latches properly but E2 keeps coming back, see "Test the part" below, or call for service. On combos, Haier says service is required for E2.
Test the part
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and turn off the water supply before you open any panel. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
The most likely failed parts are the lid switch on a top-loader or the door lock assembly on a combo. This test is for out-of-warranty washers and readers who are comfortable taking panels off.
- Unplug the washer and turn off the water. Pull the plug or switch off the breaker.
- Do a visual check first. With the door or lid open, look at the strike and the latch opening for cracks, broken plastic, or a strike that doesn't line up.
- Reach the switch or lock. On top-loaders it's usually under the top panel near the lid opening. On combos the lock sits behind the front panel or door seal. Access varies by model, so check your manual, and watch for sharp edges.
- Photograph the wires and connector, then disconnect it by the housing, not the wires.
- Identify the terminals. Use your model's wiring diagram (often inside the cabinet or behind the control panel) to find the switch contacts. A combo door lock has several terminals, and not every pair is the switch.
- Test a lid switch. Set your multimeter to the lowest ohms or continuity setting. Probe the switch terminals, then press the switch or actuator by hand. The reading should change from open ("OL") to continuity, or the other way round. No change means the switch has failed.
- Check a combo door lock. Insert the strike or press the latch by hand and check the switch pair the same way. A combo lock also has a lock coil. Repair Clinic says it should show continuity, and no continuity means the lock needs replacing. Readings vary by model, so compare against your tech sheet.
If the switch passes and E2 keeps coming back, stop and call a pro. The next checks need live voltage, which isn't a DIY job.
Safety notes
- Unplug the washer before touching the latch, switch, or wiring.
- Never bypass or tape over a lid switch or door lock. They stop the drum spinning while your hands, or a child's, can reach in.
- Don't force a locked door open. Wait for the lock to release, or for the washer to drain if there's water in the drum.
- Watch for hot water and a hot drum on combos. Let the machine cool before you open it after a drying or hot cycle.
- Keep water away from electrical parts. Put towels down in case water spills when the door opens.
- No live electrical tests. Leave voltage checks to a technician.
When to call a pro
Call Haier service or a qualified appliance technician if:
- E2 keeps coming back after the door or lid is closed and latched.
- The door won't lock or unlock, or it's locked with water inside.
- The strike, latch, or lid hinge is broken.
- Your switch tests fine but the code persists.
- You have a combo and see E2. Haier says service is required.
- The washer is under warranty. Check your terms before opening it up.
In the US, schedule Haier service at haierappliances.com/support/schedule-service or call Haier Appliances at 1-877-337-3639.

FAQ
What does E2 mean on a Haier washer/dryer combo?
Haier says it means the washer can't lock the door after 20 seconds.
What does E2 mean on a Haier top-load or portable washer?
The lid is open or isn't detected as closed. On US portables, Haier says dO, E0, and E2 all mean the lid switch is detected as open.
Can I bypass the lid switch to keep washing?
No. The switch is a safety device that stops the drum moving while the lid is open. Replace it if it has failed.
Why does my Haier washer show E2 when the lid is closed?
The latch or strike may be dirty, bent, or out of line, or the switch itself may have failed. Work through the steps above, then test the switch.
What does dd mean on a Haier portable washer?
Haier says dd isn't an error. Check that the lid is closed and the load is balanced.
