Haier Washer E4 Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
An E4 code on a Haier washer means it couldn't fill with enough water in time. Most of the time the fix is simple and free: a tap that isn't fully open, a kinked hose, low water pressure, or a clogged filter screen where the hose connects. If those checks don't clear it, the inlet valve or another internal part may need a repair.
On some Haier combination washer/dryers, the same fill problem shows as Err5.
This page covers one code. See every Haier washer code we cover on our Washer error codes page.
What the E4 code means
On Haier's US code chart for combination washer/dryers, E4 means "after 8 minutes, the selected water level has not been reached." Haier's advice is to check the plumbing and water hose connections, and it notes that service may be required.
On Haier US portable (compact top-load) washers, Haier says E4 "indicates an issue with filling." The first things to check are that the water is turned on and that the water pressure isn't too low.
The same chart also lists Err5 ("unit not sensing a full water fill") for combos. It's the same kind of problem. Haier's fix for it is to make sure the water lines are connected, not kinked, and turned on.
Which models this covers. Haier's US support pages list E4 as a fill code for combination washer/dryers and portable washers. We couldn't find a Haier US code list for full-size top-load washers, so if you have one, check your owner's manual (haierappliances.com/support/manuals) before assuming E4 means the same thing. Haier's top-load manuals and support pages in other regions (India, New Zealand, Bangladesh) also use E4 for a fill problem. Haier's UAE page gives a 12-minute limit instead of 8, which shows the timing varies by model.
Look-alike codes that mean something else:
- E1 (combo) means the washer couldn't drain within 4 minutes.
- E8 (combo) means the water is above the warning level. That's an overfill, not an underfill.
- FA (combo) is a water level sensor circuit problem. Haier says service is required.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Water tap closed or not fully open. This is the most common cause, and the easiest to fix.
- Kinked, pinched, or tangled inlet hose. Haier's portable washer manual specifically mentions this for slow filling.
- Low water pressure. Haier's HLP24E portable washer manual calls for 20 to 100 psi.
- Clogged filter screen at the inlet valve. Sand, rust, and scale collect on the small screen where the hose connects. Haier's top-load guidance for other regions lists a blocked inlet valve as a cause of E4.
- "Flood-safe" or flow-restricting hoses. For combos, Haier says flood-safe inlet hoses should not be used because they restrict water flow.
- Drain hose siphoning. If the drain hose is pushed too far into the standpipe, water can siphon out as fast as it comes in. Haier's UAE page lists this as an E4 cause, and Haier US warns about the same siphon condition on its portable washers.
- Faulty inlet valve, water level sensor, or control. If water flows freely to the washer and the screens are clean, an internal part is the likely cause.
How to fix it, step by step
Do these in order. After each step, try a cycle again.
- Open the water tap(s) all the way. On combos, make sure both hot and cold supply valves are on.
- Check that the water is actually on. Run a nearby faucet. If your household water was shut off or the pressure is low everywhere, wait until it's back to normal.
- Straighten the inlet hose. Pull the washer out gently and look for kinks, flattened spots, or a hose trapped behind the machine.
- Swap out flood-safe hoses on a combo. Use standard, new fill hoses instead. Haier says flood-safe hoses restrict flow.
- Test water flow from the hose. Turn off the tap, disconnect the hose at the washer, point it into a bucket, and turn the tap back on. A weak trickle means the problem is your plumbing or the hose, not the washer.
- Clean the inlet filter screen.
- Unplug the washer and turn off the tap.
- Unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the washer (counterclockwise), with a towel ready.
- Clean the filter screen inside the washer's water inlet with a soft brush.
- Reconnect the hose, hand-tighten it, open the tap, and check for leaks.
- Check the drain hose. Make sure it isn't pushed too far into the standpipe and isn't kinked. Check your manual for the right height and depth for your model.
- Restart the cycle. Haier's top-load manuals say to press Start/Pause once more after you fix the cause. On other models, start a new cycle.
- Suspect the inlet valve. If water flows well, the screen is clean, and E4 keeps coming back, see "Test the part" below or call for service.
Test the part
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and turn off the water supply before you open any panel. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
If the water supply checks out, the likeliest failed part is the water inlet valve, where the hose connects at the back. It has an electric coil (solenoid) for each water line.
- Unplug the washer and turn off the water tap(s).
- Check the screens and hoses. Disconnect the hoses (towels down). The inlet screens should be clean and undamaged. Look for debris in the hose ends, make sure each rubber washer is in place, and replace any hose that's cracked, bulging, or kinked.
- Reach the valve's wires. On most models that means removing the top or back panel. This varies by model, so check your manual, and watch for sharp edges.
- Photograph the wires, then pull each connector off by its housing, not the wire.
- Check each coil. Set your multimeter to the lowest ohms setting and touch one probe to each terminal of a coil. Some resistance means continuity. Infinity or "OL" (open circuit) means the coil has failed and the valve needs replacing. Repeat for each coil.
- Don't chase an exact number. We couldn't find published coil values for these Haier models, and readings vary by model. Compare against your model's tech sheet if it lists one. A coil that reads very differently from the others is also suspect.
A valve can pass this test and still be stuck shut. If the coils have continuity and E4 keeps coming back, stop and call a pro. The water level sensor and control board need live checks, which aren't DIY jobs.
Safety notes
- Unplug the washer before you do anything besides turning taps and straightening hoses.
- Turn the water off before disconnecting a hose. Supply lines are under pressure.
- Keep water away from the plug and outlet. Put towels down before you disconnect anything.
- Never do live electrical tests or bypass any switch.
- Don't fill the drum by hand to get around a fill error. Fix the supply instead.
- Combos are heavy. Get help sliding one out, and protect the floor.
- Hand-tighten hose fittings, then add a small turn with pliers. Overtightening damages threads.
When to call a pro
Call Haier service or a qualified appliance technician if:
- E4 (or Err5) keeps coming back after every step above.
- Water flows strongly from the hose but the washer still won't fill.
- You see an FA code, which is a water level sensor circuit problem.
- You see a leaking inlet valve, damaged wiring, or water inside the cabinet.
- The washer is under warranty. Check your coverage before you take panels off.

FAQ
What does E4 mean on a Haier washer/dryer combo?
Haier says it means the selected water level wasn't reached after 8 minutes. It's a fill problem.
Does E4 mean the same thing on a Haier top-load washer?
On Haier US portable (compact top-load) washers, yes: E4 is a filling issue. For full-size top-load models, check your owner's manual, because we couldn't find a Haier US code list for them.
Can low water pressure cause E4?
Yes. Haier lists low water pressure as a cause. The HLP24E portable washer manual calls for 20 to 100 psi.
Is Err5 the same as E4?
On Haier combos, Err5 means the unit isn't sensing a full water fill, which is the same kind of problem. Which one you see depends on your model.
How do I clear the E4 code?
Fix the cause first. Then close the lid or door and press Start/Pause to resume, or start a new cycle.
