Samsung Dryer 3C Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
3C on a Samsung dryer is a motor error. The dryer has detected a problem with the motor that turns the drum, or with the electronics that drive it. A power reset sometimes clears it. If 3C keeps coming back, it almost always needs a Samsung technician, and this page will tell you honestly where that point is.
- Power the dryer off for 2–3 minutes. Samsung's US support page says to power it off, wait 2–3 minutes, power it back on, and restart the cycle.
- If that doesn't clear it, cut the power completely. Unplug the dryer, or switch off its circuit breaker, for a full minute before turning it back on.
- Take some clothes out. Samsung's manual warns that overloading reduces tumbling. A smaller load is easier on the motor.
- Untangle the load. Separate sheets and anything twisted together, then close the door firmly and restart.
- Write down the code and your model number. If 3C returns, you'll need both when you request service.

What the 3C code means
Samsung's US dryer error-code page lists 3C as a "Motor Error." It says to power off the dryer for 2–3 minutes, power it back on, and restart the cycle. If the error returns, Samsung says to request service.
Samsung's UK and Australian support pages describe 3C (and 3E) as "Check the Inverter motor." Many Samsung dryers use an inverter motor, which is controlled electronically by a circuit board instead of simply switching on and off.
The user manual for one current US model (DVE(G)50BG8300) goes a step further. It says for 3C, "The PBA needs to be checked." PBA is Samsung's term for a printed circuit board. The manual's advice is to unplug the dryer and contact a Samsung service center.
So in plain terms: the dryer's control can't get the motor running the way it expects. The fault may be in the motor, the board that drives it, or the wiring between them.
About 3E: Samsung lists 3E alongside 3C on its UK and Australian pages. Samsung's US page only lists 3C. If your display shows 3E, check your own user manual's information code table.
How codes appear varies by model. Models without a digital display show codes as blinking lights instead, Samsung says.
Likely causes (most common first)
Samsung doesn't publish a ranked list of causes for 3C. Here's what its pages and manuals point to, plus the common mechanical problems repair sites list for a drum that won't turn:
- A temporary electronic glitch. This is why Samsung's first step is always a power reset.
- A heavy, overloaded or tangled load. This is worth ruling out first, even though Samsung doesn't list it as a cause of 3C.
- A motor or inverter motor fault. This is what Samsung's US, UK and Australian pages point to.
- A control board (PBA) problem. One Samsung US manual says the PBA needs to be checked for 3C.
- A mechanical problem that stops the drum turning freely. Repair Clinic lists a broken drive belt, worn drum rollers, a stuck idler pulley or a blocked blower wheel as causes of a Samsung dryer drum not turning. Samsung doesn't link these to 3C, so treat them as things to rule out, not a diagnosis.
How to fix it, step by step
Try these in order. Run a short cycle after each step to see if 3C comes back.
- Stop the cycle and empty the drum. Don't keep restarting it over and over with a full load.
- Power off for 2–3 minutes. Then power on and restart, as Samsung recommends.
- Do a full power reset. Unplug the dryer, or switch off its breaker, for 60 seconds. Samsung's guide for a dryer that won't spin uses the same 60-second reset.
- Restart with a smaller load. Samsung's manual says one wash load should equal one dryer load. Dry heavy and light items separately.
- Check that the cycle actually starts. Samsung's "won't start or spin" guide suggests selecting Time Dry and holding Start. After a minute, the timer should count down (for example, from 40 to 39).
- If the timer doesn't count down, make sure the door is closed and Child Lock is off, then try again.
- If the timer counts down but the drum doesn't turn, Samsung says to request service.
- Turn the drum by hand (unplugged). See "Test the part" below.
- Check your user manual for your model's exact steps, as Samsung's US page suggests.
- Request service if 3C returns. Samsung's US page, UK page and the user manual all say the same thing: if the code keeps coming back, contact Samsung service.
Test the part
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and turn off the water supply before you open any panel. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
Honest answer: there's very little a homeowner can safely test for 3C. The motor and its control board are tested by a technician, and Samsung doesn't publish owner test values for them. These quick checks can still spot a mechanical problem.
- Unplug the dryer. On a gas dryer, also turn off the gas valve before moving it.
- Look inside the drum. Remove anything that isn't laundry, such as coins, a shoe, or a sock wedged between the drum and the door opening.
- Turn the drum by hand. Reach in and rotate it slowly.
- If it spins very easily, with almost no resistance, Repair Clinic says the drive belt has probably broken.
- If it feels stiff or binds, Repair Clinic points to worn drum rollers, a stuck idler pulley, or something jammed in the blower.
- If it turns with steady, even resistance, the belt and drum are probably fine, which points back toward the motor or board.
- Check the lint filter housing. Pull out the lint filter and use a flashlight to look for anything that has fallen into the housing.
- Stop here. Checking the belt, rollers or motor directly means removing cabinet panels. Inverter motors and their boards can't be checked with a simple continuity test, and the wiring diagram is model-specific.
Never run the dryer with panels off, and never try live voltage tests on the motor or board.
Safety notes
- Unplug the dryer before reaching into the drum, moving it, or touching anything behind it.
- Gas dryers: turn off the gas valve before moving the dryer. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company from outside.
- Don't keep restarting a dryer that throws 3C again and again. A motor that's struggling can overheat.
- No live electrical tests. The control board and motor wiring are for a technician.
- Get help moving the dryer. It's heavy.
When to call a pro
Request Samsung service or call a qualified appliance technician if:
- 3C comes back after the power reset and a smaller, untangled load. Samsung's own pages say this means service.
- The drum spins too freely by hand, or feels stiff. Replacing a belt, rollers or idler pulley means removing the front or top panel and the drum. That's a tools-and-patience job. If you haven't done it before, it's a fair point to hand it off.
- The drum turns normally by hand but 3C persists. That points to the motor, its wiring, or the control board. Diagnosing an inverter motor needs model-specific service data and live testing, which isn't a DIY job.
- You smell burning, see smoke, or the breaker trips. Stop using the dryer and get it checked.
- Your dryer is under warranty. Opening panels yourself may affect coverage, so check the terms first.

FAQ
What does 3C mean on a Samsung dryer?
Samsung US lists 3C as a motor error. Samsung's UK and Australian pages say to check the inverter motor.
Can I fix a 3C error myself?
Sometimes a power reset clears it. Turn the dryer off for 2–3 minutes, then restart. If it comes back, Samsung says to request service.
Is 3C the same as 3E?
Samsung's UK and Australian pages list 3C and 3E together for the inverter motor. Samsung's US page only lists 3C, so check your manual.
Is it safe to keep using the dryer with 3C?
It's best not to keep forcing it. Repeated restarts on a struggling motor won't fix it. Reset once or twice, then book service if the code returns.
Does 3C mean I need a new motor?
Not necessarily. Samsung's manual for one US model says the control board (PBA) needs to be checked. A technician has to work out whether it's the board, the motor or the wiring.
