Samsung Washer Sud Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It
A Sud code on a Samsung washer means the washer has detected too many suds (foam) in the drum. Samsung says this code doesn't mean the washer needs service. It's almost always caused by too much detergent or the wrong kind, and you can fix it yourself.
Depending on your model, the same message may show as SUd, 5Ud, Sd, 5d, SUdS, or 5Ud5. They all mean the same thing.
This page goes deeper on one code. For every other Samsung washer code, see the full guide — or jump back to the SUd row in the code table.
What the Sud code means
Samsung calls this the "Excessive suds" error. The washer has sensed an over-sudsing condition and pauses for a short time to let the suds die down. Then the cycle continues on its own. The code may flash again at the end of the cycle as a reminder.
On some models, "SUdS" replaces the time remaining while the washer waits, and one of Samsung's technical sheets calls it "not an error." If you see it mid-cycle, just wait. The cycle will take longer than usual.
Samsung's support pages group SUd, 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS, and 5Ud5 as the same error. Your manual shows which one your model uses.
Look-alike codes that mean something else:
- SdC or 5dC means the detergent drawer isn't fully closed. Push it in until it clicks.
- LC or 1E is a water level or leak error. Samsung says too much or non-HE detergent can also trigger it, and advises running empty cycles until no suds appear.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Too much detergent. The main cause. HE detergent is very concentrated, so it's easy to overdo.
- The wrong detergent. Samsung washers need HE (High Efficiency) detergent. Regular detergent makes far more suds.
- Detergent buildup. Months of overdosing leave residue in the washer and dispenser that keeps making suds.
- The load or water needs less detergent. Samsung says to use less detergent for soft water, small loads, and lightly soiled loads. Samsung also notes that towels tend to make more suds.
- Slow draining. A clogged debris filter (on front loaders) or a kinked or clogged drain hose leaves sudsy water sitting in the drum. Samsung's technical guidance for a "tub full of suds" starts by checking the drain.
- A drain or control fault (rare). If the code shows up with very little detergent and the washer also drains poorly, there could be a problem with the drain pump, its wiring, or the control board.
How to fix it, step by step
Try these in order. Run a cycle after each step to see if the code comes back.
- Let the washer finish. If Sud appears mid-cycle, don't turn it off. It's pausing on purpose and should continue by itself.
- If a front loader stops with water and suds inside, Samsung Australia's advice is to press Spin until the washer starts to drain, so it can finish and unlock the door. If your model doesn't respond to Spin, you'll need to drain it using the emergency drain steps in your user manual before you can get the laundry out.
- Check your detergent. Look for the "HE" symbol on the bottle or box. Samsung warns against regular, organic, or natural detergents, and HE detergents with natural ingredients like vinegar or baking soda, saying these can damage the washer.
- Measure your detergent. Use the cap or a measuring cup, and follow the amount on the detergent label for your load size. Never fill past the MAX line in the dispenser.
- If the label's amount goes past the MAX line, use a smaller load or a more concentrated detergent.
- If you switched to a 2x or 3x concentrated detergent, use less.
- Use less for soft water, small loads, lightly soiled loads, and towels.
- Use pods the right way. If you use pods or sheets, make sure they're HE. Put them in the drum before your clothes, not in the dispenser. Samsung notes a small load may need only half a detergent sheet.
- Rinse out leftover suds. Run an empty cycle (or a Rinse+Spin) with no detergent, softener, or other additives. Repeat until you don't see suds anymore. Samsung's technical sheet also suggests one cold-water wash with a tablespoon of salt and no detergent.
- Clean the dispenser drawer. Pull it out, rinse off built-up detergent, and put it back. Your manual shows how to release it.
- Run Self Clean or Pure Cycle if your washer has it, to help remove residue.
- Check the drain. Make sure the drain hose isn't kinked, frozen, or clogged. On front loaders, clean the debris filter behind the small panel at the bottom front. Put down towels and a shallow pan first, because water will come out.
- Stop if it keeps happening. If Sud returns despite the right HE dose, a clean drawer, and a clear drain, see "Test the part" or call a pro.
Test the part
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and turn off the water supply before you open any panel. Take resistance (ohm) readings only with the power disconnected, and if you’re not comfortable using a multimeter, stop and call a pro.
Sud is rarely a part failure. Only try this if you've fixed your detergent habits, run empty cycles, and the washer also drains slowly. The part to check is the drain pump.
- Unplug the washer and shut off both taps. Pull the plug or switch off the breaker.
- Drain any water through the emergency drain hose or debris filter as your manual describes, with towels and a shallow pan ready.
- Check the filter and pump opening. Clear out lint, coins, and hair ties. Look for anything wrapped around the impeller (the small fan inside the opening).
- Check the drain hose is clear from end to end.
- Reach the pump's wires. That usually means removing a lower or back panel, which varies by model, so check your service guide. Don't tip the washer over.
- Photograph the wires, then pull the connector off by its housing.
- Check for continuity. Set your multimeter to the lowest ohms setting and touch a probe to each pump terminal. Some resistance means the motor winding is intact. Infinity or "OL" (open circuit) means it's broken and the pump needs replacing.
- Don't rely on a number from the internet. Published pump readings vary widely between washers, so only compare against your model's tech sheet or service manual.
A pump can pass this test and still be weak or jammed. If everything checks out and the washer still drains poorly, or shows Sud with very little detergent, stop and call a pro. Checking power to the pump or the control board means live voltage testing, which isn't a DIY job.
Safety notes
- Unplug the washer before cleaning the debris filter or removing any panel.
- Watch for hot water. If a hot cycle stopped mid-wash, let the water cool before you drain it or open the filter.
- Expect water. Draining through the filter can release more than a small pan holds. Keep water away from the plug and outlet.
- Don't force a locked door. Drain the washer first.
- Never do live electrical tests. Samsung's manual warns the pump, control board, and other parts can carry a shock risk during servicing.
- Don't add more detergent to "fix" poor cleaning. Samsung recommends trying a different detergent instead of using more.
When to call a pro
Call Samsung support or a qualified appliance technician if:
- Sud keeps appearing even with a measured amount of HE detergent and after several empty rinse cycles.
- The washer pauses for suds and never continues on its own.
- The washer won't drain, or water stays in the drum after the cycle ends, even with a clean filter and clear hose.
- Water is leaking out of the washer, not just suds in the drum.
- Your drain pump shows an open circuit, or you can't reach it safely.
- Your washer is under warranty. Check the terms before opening any panels.

FAQ
Is the Sud code bad for my washer?
Not by itself. Samsung says it doesn't mean service is needed, but regular overdosing leads to buildup, odors, and leaks over time.
Are Sud, Sd, and 5d the same code?
Yes. Samsung lists SUd, 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS, and 5Ud5 as the same excessive suds error.
Why does Sud flash at the end of the cycle?
Samsung says it may flash at the end as a reminder that the washer detected too many suds during the cycle. Use less detergent next time.
How do I get rid of suds already in the washer?
Run empty cycles with no detergent or additives until no more suds appear. Samsung's technical sheet also suggests a cold wash with a tablespoon of salt and no detergent.
Can I use regular detergent if I use just a little?
Samsung says no. Its washers need HE detergent, and regular detergent can make too many suds and cause damage.
